Getting Started

Hi, I want to help you get started with a new Kindle app that is not only free but can help you read Kindle books. Many of the Kindle books in the Amazon store are free. It's a great app and it's really nice to use for homeschool families, too. There are many textbooks online at Amazon that are free or very low cost.
I have several children, ranging in age from 29 to just-turned-10. I have always loved to read, and I have passed that down to my children, except for the youngest, who seems to hate it. Because of this, I have taken to trying out many different genres to entice him into developing a love of reading. So far, only books centered on Minecraft seem to hold any attraction for him. Because he's been tested and the results show he is above-average in intelligence, and he has many interests, I know he will read on his own completely, with no help from me, some day. Until then, I am going to review the books I have collected for him, books that are Kindle-compatible, and hope that I can enjoy his dependence on Mommy for a bit longer, without getting too antsy about his lack of interest. I mean, I make my living by writing for my clients, and my son cannot help me with the 'family business' because of his lack of interest.
If you're interested in the benefits of having electronic books, or e-books as they're called, but don't want the expense of a Kindle, try downloading the free app. It works on your computer, and you can read the books at any time. I've set ours up so that another program, which is also free, reads them to my son. That way, I can fix dinner, wash some clothes, take a shower, go over his homework, or just relax. We use NVDA to read the books, but I've had to point out to him that the punctuation is off when it's being read out loud. Perhaps I should make audio files for him of each book...

Kindles are lighter, you can still make notes in the margins, they are much less likely to be loaned out and never returned, they can be hooked up to a voice system so they are read to you, and many of the books are free. However, when you do get a free book, of which there are MANY, on every topic imaginable, it's always polite to leave a review for the author. It's the least you can do to say 'thank you' for a free book.
